The Center for Digital Safety & Security located in Vienna invites applications for an internship. Its experts develop state-of-the-art information and communication technologies to ensure highly secure and reliable systems in the context of digitalisation and global networking.

The research field Cyber Security within the Competence Unit for Security and Communication Technologies is leading in applied research of innovative security topics, including anomaly detection, cyber ranges, penetration testing and cryptography.

The cryptography team conducts innovative research in public key cryptography, including secure communication, privacy-enhancing technologies, long-term and post-quantum security, covering the spectrum from idea creation to prototypes and demonstrators.

Your tasks

  • Under the guidance of an interdisciplinary team, you will support the design, implementation, integration and evaluation of Software Defined Networking, SDN, techniques for Quantum Key Distribution Networks, QKDN.
  • You will extend an innovative framework composed of a Python backend and a WebUI frontend, shaping the future of a European initiative to strengthen Quantum Cryptography Networks.
  • You will learn about a variety of technology stacks from backend to frontend in the context of cryptographic applications.
  • You support international projects and get exciting insights into the technological environment.
  • You will gain experience in the development and use of cryptography in current and future applications.
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your work experiences and results with experienced scientific peers and connect with other bachelor’s, master’s or PhD students.
  • You will gain practical experience with one of the leading research companies in Austria and industry grade development processes.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner

  • You are studying in the field of informatics, computer science, mathematics or similar.
  • You are at the end of your Bachelor’s study or already enrolled in your Master’s studies.
  • You have good knowledge of object-oriented Python and web front-end technologies like JavaScript, CSS and React.
  • Basic understanding of network technologies like HTTPS REST APIs.
  • Knowledge in cryptography and graph theory are a plus.
  • Interest to work in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate on different topics.
  • Good verbal and written English skills, team language is English, German skills would be a plus.

What to expect

  • Duration of the internship: 2 - 3 months
  • Start date: summer 2026, with some flexibility concerning the start date
  • A remuneration of EUR 1.415 gross per month for 38.5 hours per week.
