The Center for Digital Safety & Security located in Vienna invites applications for an internship. In the Center for Digital Safety & Security, state-of-the-art information and communication technologies are developed to ensure highly secure and reliable systems in the context of digitalisation and global networking.

The experts from the Competence Unit Cooperative Digital Technologies work on the development of data-based IT solutions for various application scenarios, including innovative solutions supporting communities in increasing their resilience and achieving sustainable development goals.

The focus of the applications is on safety-relevant sensor systems for railways and roads.

Your tasks

  • You are part of an interdisciplinary team and contribute to setting up, expanding and improving efforts to ensure the safety of critical rail and road infrastructures.
  • You contribute to the continuous improvement of solutions for the implementation of new safety-relevant distributed fibre optic sensor technologies for rail and road infrastructures.
  • Under the guidance of the team, you will get insights into research and learn how to develop data processing and scalable machine learning methods for the entire processing chain, from data acquisition and analysis to information extraction and interactive, user-friendly result presentation.
  • You support international projects and get exciting insights into the technological environment.
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your work experiences and results with experienced scientific peers and connect with other bachelor’s, master’s or PhD students.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner

  • Ongoing master’s studies in the field of computer science, mathematics, physics or similar at an Austrian University.
  • Programming knowledge in Python, software testing, experience with Robot framework is a plus.
  • Experience with machine learning and data visualization techniques and libraries.
  • Background of signal processing or interferometry is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a team, flexibility and commitment.
  • Particular interest in applied research and in solving practical problems.
  • Good verbal and written English skills, German skills would be a plus.

What to expect

  • Duration of the internship: minimum 2 months
  • Start date: summer 2026, with some flexibility concerning the start date
  • A remuneration of EUR 1.461 gross per month for 38.5 hours per week.
