Head of IT Infrastructure & Scientific Computing (m/f/d)
Fulltime, 40 hours per week, Vienna
CeMM is seeking a dedicated Head of IT Infrastructure & Scientific Computing to drive technological evolution in a complex scientific environment. The role combines secure enterprise infrastructure with high-performance research computing, HPC clusters, virtualization, containerization platforms and high security standards.
Your role
- Provide technical and disciplinary leadership to the IT Services and Scientific Computing teams.
- Design secure, scalable end-to-end architectures for business and research requirements.
- Plan, manage and execute complex IT, infrastructure and security projects in a hybrid cloud environment.
- Design, operate and scale HPC clusters and GPU resources for computational biology, genomics and machine learning workloads.
- Manage virtualization and containerization platforms including VMware, KVM, Docker and Apptainer/Singularity.
- Develop and maintain scheduling, resource allocation and job management systems such as SLURM.
- Ensure stable, secure and performant operations across IT and scientific computing systems, including ISO 27001 standards.
- Manage data protection compliance under DSGVO/GDPR and Austrian DSG.
- Collaborate with research groups and external partners on scientific computing infrastructure and ML/AI tooling.
Your profile
- Completed higher education in Computer Science, IT Security, Engineering, Computational Biology, Business Management or equivalent experience.
- Several years of experience in IT infrastructure, system engineering or IT operations, preferably in research environments.
- Hands-on experience with Windows/Linux, Active Directory, virtualization and Microsoft Azure cloud ecosystems.
- Expertise with Linux-based HPC environments, job schedulers such as SLURM and parallel computing.
- Experience with containerization and virtualization technologies for scientific workloads.
- Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and GPU computing infrastructure.
- Understanding of IT security principles including ISO 27001 and NIS2, and data protection laws including DSGVO and DSG.
- Scripting and automation skills with Python, Bash, Ansible or similar tools.
- Fluent English communication skills.
